HATHA YOGA CLASSES with KATA
Asana, Pranayama, Mantra
January 16 - Ma rch 27
April 3 to May22(including Easter Sunday)
In
this multi-level class, I would like to continue the exploration of the
other traditional elements of yoga: breath-work (pranayama) and
chanting (mantra). These two components often get overlooked in our
Western practice of yoga that tends to focus on postures (asanas). By
introducing breathing techniques and exercises as well as the 'japa'
element of chanting, we expand our yogic horizons and create a holistic
approach to the spiritual art of yoga. Although some yoga experience
will be helpful, I intend to keep this class an all-level class,
offering frequent modifications. In return, I ask you to cultivate an
open heart and mind towards some of the 'unusual' elements!
I
would also like to add that as I have been recently exploring the theme
of truth, I joked around last time that I should just call both my
classes Yoga and the Quest for the True Self (after
the inspirational book by Stephen Cope). You may expect this theme to
come up more and more frequently in both of my classes as I feel I am
moving a little closer to my inner truth that resides in my heart. I
hope to take you along on this lovely journey that will constantly
inspire you to ask the questions: Who am I? What is
my heartfelt desire? What is my inner truth telling me? When we start
to explore these questions, life (and our yoga practice) becomes full,
radiant and exciting!
Kata Huncik
I
have been introduced to yoga during my university years. During the
first yoga class I felt challenged, exhausted but at the end of class
the reward was astounding, and it soon became a regular routine in my
life. During those first years of yoga exploration I had been inspired
by many wonderful teachers, and by the time I finished my Masters
degree in Musicology in Ottawa, I felt I had a new calling.
I
immersed myself in a 200-hr Hatha Yoga teacher training in Ottawa (Rama
Lotus Yoga Centre), which was followed by 500-hr Hatha – Akhanda –
Classical Kundalini training in India with Yogi Vishvketu. When I moved
to Calgary I discovered the beautiful heart-centered and life affirming
style of Anusara Yoga founded by John Friend. This new style offered a
yet deeper transformation in my yoga practice and personal life;
therefore I explored it deeper through a 200-hr Anusara YTT with Martin
and Jordan Kirk.
Today,
I happily incorporate all these various styles into my teaching, which
results in a diverse blend of strong alignment instructions, heart
themes, conscious focus on breath and a focus on the unity of mind,
body and spirit, which is the ultimate goal and meaning of yoga.
Although I guide people through yoga sequences, I like to point out
that there is a much more important and wiser teacher within each of us
that is waiting to be re-discovered and listened to. I believe, a good
yoga class - among its countless other beautiful benefits - helps us to
make this intimate connection to our beautiful inner guru.
