VOCAL TEJASE

VOICE ENHANCEMENT FOR THE YOGA TEACHER

Voice work is both a remarkable artistic endeavour and a fundamental, empowering life skill. As a Yoga teacher you sit in a seat of honour and service to your students, needing to clearly communicate your life-enhancing, beautiful and auspicious practice.

The Yoga Kula Collective is excited to partner with  Jessica Dallard and Ava Jane Markus to offer this series of workshops specifically created for Yoga teachers.

This eight module workshop series provides:

  • An introduction to the nature of voice production and articulation. The emphasis will be on freeing the natural voice as it pertains to teaching yoga from the heart.
  • A fundamental discussion of breathing, resonance, volume, articulation, pitch and pacing will be provided to set the foundation for a strong voice/heart connection.
  • Yoga teachers will leave with a vocal warm-up to practice daily that when used consistently will aid in freeing the natural voice.

Location: World Tree Yoga Studio
812 Edmonton Trail NE

Fee: $50.00 + GST per Module
(Module 1,2 & 3 are offered as a one day intensive at $150)

Module 1: Introduction to the Voice
9:00 am – 4:00 pm - Sunday
 March 18, 2012

Participants will be introduced to the anatomy of the voice and sound production, physical and energetic habits, emotional imprints on the voice, beginning breath release work and a personal inventory of the participant’s goals. (Week One is a prerequisite for all other modules).

Module 2: Breath Release and Truth Through Tone
9:00 am to 4:00 pm - Sunday,March 18, 2012

This week investigates how to access the natural breath and how to support our unique voice. Exercises will be focused on breath; how breath is connected to emotion and how to flow with the emotional life of the breath. With the breath on board, we will be moving toward simple sound production on an open tone. Participants will become acquainted with their natural voice’s range, volume and agility.

Module 3: Onset of Sound and Self-Care
9:00 am to 4:00 pm  - Sunday March 18, 2012

Participants will learn how to engage the voice in a healthy and gentle way. Exercises will focus upon the clear onset of sound and how the breath and voice work together. This week will also cover vocal health, exercises for vocal fatigue and fatigue prevention, as well as how stress can effect and hinder the vocal instrument.

To Register for the Module 1, 2 & 3 Intensive:

Module 4: Resonance and Maintaining the Voice
7:30 – 9:30pm - Thursday March 22, 2012

This week participants will be introduced to their resonators; the chest, cheeks, nasal cavity and crown. Through exercises participants will develop greater sensitivity of their own resonators, how to move the sound around and how to use the resonators to amplify the voice safely. (Pre-Requisite: Modules 1, 2 & 3)

Module 5: Resonance and Holding Space
7:30 – 9:30pm - Thursday March 29, 2012

Continued practice with resonance will give participants the ability to hold the “seat of yoga teacher” in a powerful way. Expect to learn different techniques that can be applied to accommodate larger or smaller class sizes. Vocal fullness and richness will be explored through exercises so that the students may work towards unveiling their full vocal sound and potential. (Pre-Requisite: Modules 1, 2 & 3)

Module 6: Articulation for Clarity and Specificity
7:30 – 9:30pm - Thursday April 5, 2012

This week will focus upon articulation exercises. Articulation is our greatest ally for the effective communication of ideas. Particularly in a yoga class, articulation enhances the teacher’s ability to move swiftly through instructions, spiritual ideas and helps to engage the yoga student’s imagination. Articulation can also assist us when we are required to teach through a cold, vocal fatigue or emotional overwhelm. (Pre-Requisite: Modules 1, 2 & 3)

Module 7: Rich Thinking and How Thought Affects Sound /Meaning
7:30 – 9:30pm - Thursday April 12, 2012

Thoughts can affect our ability to freely release sound or not; rich thinking leads to rich sound and deeper meaning in fewer words. Participants will learn exercises to engage their imagination and how to employ their alert mind for succinct communication in a yoga class. A clear thought results in clear communication. Thought effects the amount of breath, rate of breath, choice of words and the quality of tone. (Pre-Requisite: Modules 1, 2 & 3)

Module 8: Full Warm-up and Creative Speaking
7:30 – 9:30pm - Thursday April 19, 2012

During the last class participants will be led through the entire vocal warm-up. Combining exercises from all eight classes, students will leave with a compact but effective warm-up that can be used everyday or a few times/week. With regular practice this warm-up will strengthen the voice, increase range and vocal agility and prevent the participants from experiencing vocal fatigue after a busy week of teaching. We will also touch upon techniques for building a unique vocabulary and ways to further develop your own imaginative speaking style and voice. (Pre-Requisite: Modules 1, 2 & 3)
